Hi ladies! First of all, welcome to the new joiners this month, who are Heather England, Magdalena Komorowska and Amy Young.
Quite a lot has been going on this month, starting with the Thetford weekend, where a great time had by all judging by the photos! Wish I could have been there…maybe next year. It must have been a bit of a surprise for Thetford parkrun when all those blue vests turned up.
We are well into the Mickey Edwards handicap now; next week we will be onto round 4 of the series, which has been hugely supported by you all. What with parkruns as well, everyone’s 5k times are improving constantly, which is a real pleasure to see. It’s not my favourite distance, as most people know from my constant moaning when I do run it, but I have it on good authority that it does us good!
Rodger’s last trail run was held a couple of weeks ago, and was a really lovely course. As always, I am amazed to discover countryside I never knew existed so close to home and we were lucky with the weather, as we have been so far this year. We had great facilities too, with the luxury of a hall and real toilets! If you haven’t yet sampled a trail run, come and give the next one a go. There will always be someone to run with, you won’t be on your own and it’s worth it for the cake afterwards! Race 3 will be held on June 25th. The venue and distance have not yet been released, so keep an eye on the website.
The next big Bentley event will be our own Friday 5 race. Paul has been emailing and Facebooking asking for volunteers to help marshal on the day. If you haven’t put your name down and are available to help, please let Paul know. We have a great reputation for well organised races, as well as great cake! We need lots of helpers for the Friday 5, especially as we have two junior races. Vicky P has worked very hard over the last few years to make our junior events into the great races they are, but to put this on safely we need a lot of marshals to keep the kids safe and make sure everything runs smoothly. The Friday 5 is on Friday July 7th in Great Bentley.
The Ekiden Relays will be held in July too, on Sunday 16th in the grounds of Woodbridge School. Chris and I are currently organising the teams, and we will be letting you know these shortly, once they have been finalised, so keep an eye on your email inboxes.
The club’s 30th Anniversary Extravaganza will be held on the green and in the football club at Great Bentley on Saturday 5th August. We will have games on the green from about 3pm, followed by a hog roast, music and a bar in the football club. More details will be released nearer the time, but it will be a family affair, so bring the kids. Add yourself to the event in the Facebook group if you’d like to come, or drop me an email.
There is also our awards evening, which although a long way off yet, is definitely worth putting on the calendar now. This will be held on November 25th, at 6:45pm for a prompt 7:30 start. It will be at Wivenhoe House Hotel. Once again, further details are to come, but please save the date!
I have been asked to give a special mention to Caroline Searle this month, by Rebecca Conran. Rebecca recently ran the Copenhagen marathon, and feels that Caroline was instrumental in her training, going above and beyond to help her start the race in the best possible condition. Caroline is currently undergoing CiRF (Coach in Running Fitness) training, and has not only been coaching Rebecca, but has been there with advice and support as well, always willing to go the extra mile to find answers to questions. Caroline will soon be fully qualified, as will Linzi, so we will then have access to three coaches with Michael, plus the group of LiRFs (Leaders in Running Fitness) who support them.
Finally, Runner of The Month! Lorna and I have decided that this month it goes to a lady who has run her first marathon, and chose the notoriously hilly Halstead and Essex Marathon to do so. The weather was warm, but she came in well under 4 and a half hours, a great achievement for a first marathon on such a demanding course! Congratulations go to Geraldine Springett; you are our Runner of The Month!
