Sunday saw 8 and a half (Simon Miller donning his Springfield Struders team for this one) Bentley runners take in the Pleshey half marathon. Pleshey is a little village on the outskirts of Chelmsford whose half marathon is 2 weeks later than usual this year due to a village hall faux pas (seems Great Bentley isn’t the only village to have idiots!) but luckily still a warm and dry day for a 13.1 mile run!
The undulating course included a tough last mile which took the runners back to the village hall green for the final 100m was also the Essex championship event this year so there were plenty of runners out. This inspired some impressive times being set by our Blue contingent.
Lee Clarkson and Matt Jones provided competition for each other running the course together with Jones getting the dip on the line posting a 6 minute Personal Best (PB) of 1:37:18 followed by Clarkson in 1:37:19 again a PB of some 2 minutes.
Debs Cubberley being paced by Paul Hollidge set a 2 minute PB finishing just 8 seconds over her season target of 2 hours, a target she hopes to hit next week at Peterborough. Leoni Harvey, who hadn’t fully prepared apparently, only went and knocked a massive 32 minutes off her PB finishing in 2:03:27, she used the Hollidge pace for the first seven miles which set her up for this huge improvement. Not to be outdone on the PB trail Alison Clarke knocked 3 minutes off hers finishing in 2:06:41 and Liz Jones broke the tape in 2:15:16 which is a massive 5 minutes 44 seconds improvement! Toni Wilson came 3rd in the F55 category in 1:56:25 whilst Miller posted himself a very sprightly time of 1:34:33. Brilliant running from everyone!
The race comes highly recommended with all important cake available at the end along with a BBQ and a massage tent for anyone with any niggles that needed tending to!
Paul Blackwell celebrated his 50th birthday in the only way he knows how by running a marathon of course! This week it was the Phoenix Pyjamathon song Thames Embankment which was a lap event, Blackwell completed 8 rain soaked laps for his marathon.
On a bit of a detour from just running David Iddon did the Notley Dualathon which saw two 4km runs split by a 21km bike ride. Iddon completed his debut in this event in 1:28:48.
As usual Saturday is Parkrun day and our tourists showed us the way with 2 PBs set, firstly Adam Smith ran the Norwich 5km in a PB of 17:06 and over at Chelmsford Luke Groves hit a PB of 26:28. Our final tourist (well for us on North Essex anyway) was Louise Upston who ran Basildon in 32:05.
There were plenty of familiar faces in Colchester castle park this week with nine GBRC runners toeing the line. Ben Finken led the blue home in 20:10 followed closely by Vicky Presland in 20:23. Many of our other runners were loosening their legs for the main event at Pleshey the following day. Our runners were Lee Clarkson (22:55), Debs Cubberley (27:29), Paul Hollidge (27:30), Scott Young (27:18), Chusa Batis (27:34), Sue Sorrell (30:02) and Rebecca Conran (31:55).
Many of you would have seen that there is a new Parkrun in Clacton which is having its trial event this Saturday morning if you fancy blowing off the cobwebs with a 5km run.
