Men’s Newsletter – July

July newsletter

Hi Gents,

It’s certainly been a busy month for many of you, and especially for the club, beginning with our Friday 5 which although I wasn’t there I’m told was once again a big success, we are not the biggest club around but the huge support you provide to ensure our races go ahead means so much to those involved in the organisation, and allow the club to continue to receive great reviews from runners across the county and beyond.

I for one have been delighted with the offers of help throughout the Micky Edwards series, which concluded this month with overall success going to John Ferdinand, he managed to win 2 of the 4 heats and improve his 5k time by over 5 minutes, that is a huge amount of time over that distance and he thoroughly deserves the title, well done John.

The Geoff Day memorial race also took place with Joe once again 1st man home on a hot and humid night for running, but in truth its not about the race but the Bentley spirit that you guys create by turning up to support and provide for your fellow members, seeing new members mixing with some of our past members, and having Alan, Donny, and Bradley Day all present makes this night very unique event and a pleasure to be a part of.

Added to the mix was the Ekiden relay, which we have been apart of for many years now and Jaffa do a great job of organising so many clubs, we entered 9 teams plus 2 junior teams and although it was tough running in the heat. Again the support you all provided meant so much as we ran round and round that field gives me a great sense of pride to be a part of this club.

New member Adam Smith having just joined this month ran a tough 10k leg, and managed a club standard for his effort, he is certainly very quick, and I hope will continue to get faster from training regularly with us.

Coming up in August is another trail run this time around Friday woods on the 21st August, personally I’m disappointed to miss this as I’m on holiday, I do hope many of you can go to support Rodger and make it another success.

For me this month has been all about the Bentley spirit and once again you have turned up and done your bit when the club has needed you, so thank you all for showing your support to us captains and those like Russ, Paul, Rodger and Eric who all give a lot of time and energy to put the great into Bentley running club.

On the racing front I want to congratulate a few in particular this month, Charlie for his 1st place at Harwich park run, Gary Hill on pb’s at the stort 10, and Bentley 5, along with his fastest 5k at ME this year, and all this after suffering hamstring problems in June, Richard Moor on collecting a silver standard at the Brantham 5, Mark Jasper on getting his Gold at Micky Edwards and then smashing it by another 7 seconds at the last race. And where would we be without another marathon or two from Paul Blackwell, up to 79 I believe now!

I have left one man out of the above as he gets my vote for runner of the month, He began the month with another sub 30 minute 5 miler, ran a stonking 1st lap at Ekiden to set his team up for a 4th place finish, and pushed me all the way at the Geoff Day 5k, he has been a member for a number of years and is clearly working very hard to get the speed he wants to achieve, after a successful XC season he is now pushing through the gears on the road. A loyal member and a pleasure to see him running so well, congratulations and well done to David Wright.davewrightekiden

I wish you all a great month of running ahead, I won’t be around at the club over the next few weeks but look forward to catching up with you all very soon.
