Ladies Newsletter July 2016

It’s been another busy month! First of all, thanks to Karen for taking over the writing of the newsletter last month – I think it was a great one, and she should definitely do some more!

We have had two great running and social events this month, with Ekiden and the Geoff Day Memorial 5k seeing a fantastic turnout of ladies to both run and eat cake! Ekiden was super hot, but runners gave it their all despite the heat, and a great day was had. I am eternally grateful to Debs for swapping my 10k for her 5k with me, had no idea it would turn out to be so hot! The Mickey Edwards series finished this month as well, with some great performances and huge improvements to be seen in all of you. Last but not least, everyone pulled together to make our own Friday 5 race go off smoothly. There were many comments from other runners on how friendly and supportive our marshals were, keeping the excellent reputation we have for putting on well organised races. It goes without saying how well the cake went down…

There has been so much racing this month, it’s difficult to pick people out, and there’s not enough room to mention everyone, but, congratulations to Meera on her hugely successful 39.6 mile ultra in Kent, where she not only competed but won the event. Well done too to Gemma Colling, who not only got herself a 5 mile PB at Brantham, but also completed a 50 mile ultra the following week, crossing the line 8 minutes under her expected time!

I must also mention Rebecca Conran, who this month has gained a 10k PB at the London Vitality run, plus a 5 mile PB at the Kirste Memorial 5.

So many of you are running really well and improving all the time, it’s really good to see. It’s lovely to see so many juniors out running too,  especially now that Junior Parkrun has started in Colchester.

The next club event on the calendar is the 4th of Rodger’s trail runs, held this time at Friday woods in Colchester, on the 21st August. This distance will be 7 miles, and as usual, there will be hot and cold drinks, food and cakes galore afterwards.

Looking further ahead, even though Christmas is the last thing I want to think about, our Awards Extravaganza will be held at Wivenhoe House Hotel on Saturday 26th November. The club are subsidising the cost of this, so we need to pay £30 in order to attend. Payment needs to be made to Karen Skene by 30th August to secure your place; hopefully everyone has received the email now, or seen it on the Facebook group!

Finally, Runner of The Month. This lady has kept her recent success very quiet, or at least she tried to, but then Debs got to hear about it… She’s always there on a Wednesday evening, but usually making the tea rather than running. However, this year she has competed in the Harwich 5k series, and only gone and won it! Well done Rita Page, you are my runner of the month for July. Sadly, I cannot find a picture of her.

Right, that’s it for this month. Tomorrow I am off on holiday for a couple of weeks…did I happen to mention that recently..?

Have a great start to August, enjoy your holidays if you are off on them, enjoy your running, and be proud of it whatever your level. Remember, whatever you are doing, you’re lapping everyone on the couch!
