Ladies Newsletter – September

RUNNER OF THE MONTH FOR SEPTEMBER

Glad I am a few days late this month writing this as I can say a big well done to everyone who ran the 5 mile tempo run last night. Some great running but very proud of Willow who ran in the 8 minute mile group (keep the faith and don’t drop down again!!) and our newest lady Laura who managed to put in a great sprint finish after one of her longest runs to date. And…. welcome back Emma F, I have added you back into my ladies list so don’t be a stranger!! We also have been joined properly by Philippa this month so lovely to get to know you and see you at sessions.

September is the month of 10ks and half marathons and for the prolific cyclists/swimmers amongst you, there were a lot of triathlons and duathlons. The start of the month was Langham where 15 of you ladies ran. Meera came away with another 10k pb and a higher entry in the top 10 performances but some great performances from the rest of you. There obviously was a great battle between Eileen, Rachel and Jennifer which bodes well for XC with Karen not far behind. Great to see Lyn back running in a Bentley vest and Hien back on a start line. Dedham followed with 5 women taking part. Anthea, running faster than Langham and a whole 4 minutes faster than when she wasn’t with the club a year ago!! Shows that structured sessions and possibly Sam punishing her on a Thursday is working.

Then came the halfs – first the next stage of the Essex Champs at Pleshey where we had 5 women taking part. Steph coming back strongly from injury, Clare and Caroline getting new pbs and bronze standards and Barbara/Debs completing the line up. Not sure where everyone is in the Champs as they are not updated yet but we have 2 more races left at Wix then Stebbing (which isn’t full yet). Pleshey is a beautiful half marathon course but some of you decided to do Ipswich instead. Jennifer bagged another pb and a bronze standard with Claudia and Karen putting in strong performances. I did Ealing at the end of the month to start a busy season now of racing after a quiet summer, Helene took on the TBL Reverse Half Marathon in Milton Keynes and it was lovely to hear Janine feeling positive about her run at the Maldon Half Marathon. Janine also started leading a tempo group showing off the skills she has gained through her new LiRF qualification.

Juggling the running with some cycling was one of our juniors, Megan Hughes who did her first duathlon at Clacton. She was mixing it up with one of our other stars of the month, Lynsey Apps

who came second in the Sprint Triathlon. Tricia got a great time doing a sprint triathlon in Dunmow. Lizzie Bodmer who is technically still one of our Juniors participated in a full triathlon in Cambridge and did amazingly well showing how much she has come on over the summer. Then to top it off, Sam continued to show us what great form she is in winning her sprint triathlon. Tomorrow is the Notley Duathlon where we have Sue, Eileen, Lynsey, Alison, Sophie, Linzi and our Vice Captain Lesley taking part. Perhaps quietly until now, our Chair Russ is also on the start line (with Andy and Martin) so good luck to all of you too. A lovely event so enjoy.

A number of you are running Marathons this month – I know who you are and everyone else will next month (unless you wish to stay quiet). Remember to stay confident of your own abilities and for a couple of you take those gels at mile 18. I do want to wish Alison the best of luck at Chelmsford – I know how disappointed you were last year with the course issues and we are all wishing you luck for the time you deserve.

So to my Runner of the Month. This month I wanted to give the Runner of the Month to a lady who thought she would never get back to full fitness after being out of action for a couple of months at the end of last year with an operation on her foot. However, how she fought back – after running Langham and then completing Ipswich half which is not the easiest of Half Marathon courses, she has shown that perseverance pays off. And she did all that whilst chasing you all for your money for the Xmas meal…….!!!!! I don’t need to say anymore, my Runner of the Month for September goes to KAREN SKENE.

PS – Notices!!!!

Track session – Fridays are a moving feast now, 2 sessions at the stadium, one at the Arena and the next Track session on 16 October. Keep an eye on the website for where we are

XC – It is only a month away 1 November at Notley Country Park. Don’t be shy, come and join in. One lady in the week told me that she was worried she would be last – for the front runners, yes there are points at stake and maintaining our position in league one BUT for the club it is a great morning out with friends, camaraderie and the more of you that join in the better the event is. First or last it really is the taking part that counts and makes it special. Come and chat with me if you want to ask any questions and I will cheer every one of you in over the line.

Rodger’s Trail Run – the last one is at the end of the month on the 28 Oct from Great Bentley – 5 miles although think 6 and you probably won’t be far off. It is a night run so come to the hall as normal. Head torches and trail shoes recommended.
