Sunday 25th August saw the annual Mersea Island 5 and 10 mile races run by a large contingent of Great Bentley runners. Laura Emms, Janine Simpson and Eileen Shadford took the ladies team prize in the 10 mile event, with times of 1:23:07, 1:24 and 1:20:36 (pb) respectively. Laura Emms was running her first 10 mile race, as was Lesley Fuller, who completed the course in 1:43:37, along with her running partner Martin Owen. Andy Fuller gained a pb with his time of 1:17:13, and Shawn Leek, racing for the first time since illness was pleased with his 1:19:20 time.
Other runners were Eric Shaw 1:23:10, Kevin Stevens 1:15:09, Charlie Keitch 1:06:08, Sue Sorrell 1:38:45 and Jamie Neill 1:19. Mark Crittendon, whose running has been improving steadily throughout the season, ran the 5 mile event in 47:53.
In other races, Scott Young ran the Gt Yarmouth half in 1.56.20 as a pacing race for the upcoming Chester marathon.
Ben Ficken took part in the Race The Train event in Wales, where runners must run approximately 14 miles alongside or close to the railway line of the Talyllyn railway, attempting to beat the train on it’s journey to Abergynolwyn and back. Ficken ran the multi terrain course in 1:42, beating the train by 5 minutes.
