Men’s Newsletter – July 2022
A short newsletter from the chaps this time…
To start off we would like to remember Davina who sadly passed away recently, and whose funeral took place last week. It was wonderful to see so many GBRC turning out to pay their respects wearing Bentley Blue and going to the beach afterwards to remember Davina in a very special way.
I will say no more than echo the wonderful sentiments Meera included in the ladies newsletter and just remind everyone of the Trail Run that has been organised in Davina’s memory on Sunday 21st August. It would be wonderful to see as many of you as possible.
What a scorcher of a month it has been! Thankfully (from a runner’s perspective anyway) things appear to be cooling down a bit and it’s easier to get out without getting up ridiculously earlier or running just before bed…
The beginning of July saw GBRC host the final Friday 5 race, which was (as always) a great success with a massive turnout and loads of positive comments and feedback from runners. Well done to all those who helped put on both the main race and the children’s race, as usual an excellent GBRC event. Also well done to all those, young and old, who ran on the night.
We also saw the conclusion of the Mickey Edwards 5k series on 6th July, and I hope everyone will agree it was a great series of races with so many inspiring performances and great support from marshals and others that helped us put the races on. See you the same time next year!
Finally, while we are patting ourselves on the back, the annual Geoff Day 5k also took place this month, with an excellent turnout of 43 runners. Always lovely to see members of the Day family, and their friends, come and join us for this memorial race to either run or cheer everyone on. The worthy winner of this year’s race was Mark Jasper.
All of the above are real examples of the fantastic club we are all lucky to be a part of, and in recent times particularly, we should value all those who help run the club our wonderful fellow members and friends.
Looking ahead to the coming month we have loads going on as usual, with Ekiden coming up at the weekend, the August Trail Run and Davina’s charity trail run to name but a few…
A reminder that we get a detailed report each week from our wonderful team of reporters, so you have missed any of these during the month go back and have a read, they can be found on the website.
So, to Runner of the Month (ROM) for July. This person has been on the tip verge of being crowned RoM for the last couple of months. Having come back from a period of injury he has gone from strength to strength, working hard in training and having some great runs in both the Mickey Edwards and Friday 5 series. This culminated in a PB in the last Friday 5 and 19th overall in his age category for the series, and 3rd male and 5th overall in Mickey Edwards. These results show the progress made in the last couple of months, and hopefully there is more to come.
Well done Daniel Whymark you are this July’s Runner of the Month.
