Beat the heat!

The hottest August Bank holiday on record saw many of you away or otherwise trying to find somewhere cool to hide so a reasonably quiet week (in running terms at least) ensued. You’ve also been very shy with your photos this week so (with apologies) I’ve trawled some of the parkrun Facebook pages and selected some for you!

The parkrun tourist of the week crown is shared this time by Rob Dyer, who ran Amager Fælled parkrun in Copenhagen (with some little Dyers!), finishing in 46:03 and Charlie Keitch who, with a time of 19:19, was first finisher at parkrun de Rouen in France – well done Charlie!

Slightly closer to home, but still somewhat north is Prudhoe Riverside parkrun in Northumberland. Representing Great Bentley and despite the wrong shoes (for someone!), illness and a rather long warm-up were Robin Oakley, finishing in 19:48 and Meera Rajoo-Oakley in 24:45.

Back in East Anglia and over at Mulbarton in Norfolk, Andy Fuller finished in 27:20.

Rob Blackman visited Bury St Edmunds parkrun and came home in 20:22.

On more familiar turf (or at least tarmac!) at Colchester Castle, first Blue to finish was Craig Warriner in 19:57, followed by Paul Hollidge in 22:03 and Chusa Batis in 26:06. Completing the Bentley line-up were Stephanie Mills at 28:00 and Deborah Hollidge in 28:29.

At Clacton Seafront, Ray Baggs finished in 22:24 followed by Patrick Reynolds in 25:21. Next home were Kieron Hayes (29:19), Alison Clarke (31:19) and Stewart Baggs in 32:43 (to claim a new PB!). Kevin James crossed the line with a 33:54, Heather England with 34:08, Claire Reynolds with 36:06 and Sandra James in 40:30. Well done all!

Second female home at Harwich was Emily Zethraeus in 20:54. Stephen Walsh finshed in 24:34 followed by Leoni Harvey in 28:32.

It was Felixstowe’s 7th parkrun on Saturday with 4 of you making the trip; Justine Sheekey claimed a new PB finishing in 22:20 – well done Justine! Dave Jones crossed the line in 26:28 followed by Emma Welham in 28:45 and Teresa Jones on 31:04, also earning herself a new PB – well done Teresa!

Highwoods delivered a hattrick of PB’s for Rob Ferguson (21:18), Vicky Presland (22:47) and Phil Presland (24:33). Anthea Colsell bettered last weeks time by a minute and a half to finish in 25:35 with James McCullagh finishing in 29:24.

Unperturbed by the heat, 5 of our Juniors turned out for Colchester junior parkrun on Sunday with Angel Jasper finishing in 9:02, Leni Laverack in 10:32, Frances Laverack (10:51), Yasmin Leek (15:40) and Rodger Ferguson in 18:10.

Over at Clacton, Poppy Welham finished in 16:28.

The Mid Essex Casuals quarter marathon at The Elms in Witham saw Phil and Vicky Presland, Debs and Paul Hollidge all finish in 1:19:45. Also braving the blinding heat were Sue Wright and Barbara Law who both finished n 2:13:00. Sue says that this was “possibly the most challenging so far in terms of the narrative” and that most people got lost! Glad you all made it back in the end!

Celebrating their wedding anniversary at the weekend, Paul and Sarah Davison ran a “very hot, and undulating” Severn Bridge Half marathon with Paul finishing in 1:39:10 and Sarah in 1:57:53. Congratulations to you both!

Sunday also saw the Mersea 5 and 10 mile races. Very wisely opting for the lesser distance (given the heat), Anthea Colsell finished in 42.12 (8 seconds ahead of her watch!). Anna Young finished in 49:10 despite being on antibiotics for a chest infection – there’s dedication to the cause! Well done to both of you!
