Men’s Newsletter – July

After the “mudfest” end of June, the sun shone bright for the last in the series of Friday 5’s, our very own at Bentley, We had 2 races for the Juniors organised by Captain Vicky and her support team, and what a blue turnout, 7 boys in the 1km race, with Harrison Leek winning the race in a very tight finish, and 4 boys starring in the 2km race, in the Senior race a big PB for Phil  Presland, Gary Hill ran he’s 1st 5 Mile race and congratulations to Simon Dale, Eric Shaw, and Frank Gardiner for gaining series medals.

Charlie Keitch took on the tough Bewl 15 and ran a new PB, I’m sure if we could only find a flat 15 we will see another standard achieved by Charlie, whom later in the month went on to run a new PB at the GBRC Club Champs, and he was not alone as despite the warm conditions, so did, Malcolm Jarvis, Phil Presland, and Harvey Lyon.

A big thank you to Vicky, Anita, Caroline, Sue, and from the men James and Keith Porter, for the catering, it was a great idea to set up outside the hall and the BBQ went down very well with many of you, and I don’t know how, but some of you didn’t just go back once, but some and you know who you are found room for 3rd’s and even 4th’s!

Prior to the 5K Champs we had our annual Ekiden relay at Woodbridge School, we managed to field 6 male teams and 2 mixed junior teams, So thank you to all who took part in running and assisting in setting up camp, and looking after our juniors, and lets not forget the Bentley bakers, another amazing sea of cake on display to keep us all going.

Unfortunately for Simon Dale the curse of Runner of the month returned, twisting he’s ankle and damaging ligaments on the 1st lap, I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Simon a speedy recovery, and hopefully back  running soon.

Well done to Darren Horner, for taking over from Simon to complete the 7.2k run before he himself set off for he’s own 10k leg, and on a course, I personally don’t think is designed for personal best’s, it didn’t stop both Malcolm Jarvis and Patrick Reynolds  achieving  one on their 10k leg.

I think our stars of the day had to be the juniors, Michael Oates and Harrison Leek, played their part in the mixed over 12’s winning their event, and young Ben Lyon ran with a big smile throughout he’s lap for the under 12’s in he’s 1st run with Bentley.

We have had runners competing in London at 5K, Brantham at 5 miles, and well done to Graham ‘dusty’ Miller for completing another ironman event in the heat of Nottingham,  some of you even went  in search of mud in July at Brightlingsea 5k, Which reminds me if you haven’t seen them yet the 53-12 XC fixtures are out and on our website so take a look and get them in your diary.

The Harwich 5k series came to a close this month, we had 15 runners take part throughout this popular event, with Dave Nugent, Mark Crittendon, and Kevin James, running all of them, and Gary Hill, Stuart Baggs, and Martin West, running in 4 of the 5  with each of them finishing with faster times then which they started the series, which goes to  show if you keep at it you will succeed.

Rodgers 2nd trail run proved once again a great success, with Ben Ficken and Patrick Reynolds finishing joint 1st,  over the 10-11 but more like 13 mile run,  look out for round 3 at Hadleigh on 31st August this time over 7-8 miles.

For runner of the month there have been a few options,  but in Clive’s absence  my vote goes to Malcolm Jarvis, a new  pb at the club champs bringing him ever  so close to that sub 20 for 5k, he is  also now a veteran of 34 park runs all at Colchester, and he  went on to achieve a pb and silver standard in his 10k leg at Ekiden.  Congratulations Malcolm, keep up the good work.
