The Blue Vests held their annual half marathon on Sunday 9th February. Although the rain held off for the day, there was a punishing gusty wind for runners to contend with, which made for tough running, and hard won PBs. A total of 748 runners turned out to run this well established, popular race, and some brilliant times were achieved by all despite the very windy conditions. First Bentley man home in 22nd place was Chris Warren in just 1:20:08, a PB, followed by Dave Goldsmith, 75th, in 1:27:30, also a PB. Michael Simmons came in 84th place taking just 1:28:22. New members Darren and Steph Horner took 1:32:58(PB) and 1:59:18 respectively, and Patrick Reynolds took 1:34:10(PB). Jamie Neill was next in 1:38:35(PB). First Bentley woman was Eileen Shadforth 1:43:44, shaving 3 minutes off her previous PB, then Janine Simpson 1:44:13. Scott Young ran a PB in 1:48:37 and Samantha Godden finished in 1:48:44. Other runners were Michael James 1:50:00(PB), Miriam Mark 1:54:02, Martin West 1:56:30, Martin Owen 1:57:16(PB), Lesley Fuller 1:57:21(PB), Viv Cassidy 2:01:45, Lynsey Apps 2:13:52(PB), Willow Carlisle, running her first half marathon, finished in 2:15:52 and Barbara Law was first woman over 65 in 2:17:13. Most of the GBRC runners had been on site since early morning, setting up, directing traffic, giving out race numbers and generally helping to make sure the race went off in a well organised manner. Despite the Village Green being too waterlogged to park on, all visiting runners were parked safely near race HQ and a good day was had by all, according to the many positive comments the club has received.
