Mud, Sweat and Tears

37 Blue Vests set off for Aldermaston in West Berkshire to compete in Endure 24, a 24 hour 5 mile relay event. The race takes place in Wasing Park and is a cross country course winding through forest, over gravel tracks and around fields. The aim of the game is to complete the most laps in a 24 hour period. Runners were divided into 7 teams ranging from 4 to 8 in each to take on this challenging race. The race began at 12 noon on Saturday 28th June and did not finish until the same time the next day, with teams having to ensure they had a runner on the course at all times. The rain started just after the race did, and continued into the early hours, turning the trail into a quagmire, but runners battled on nonetheless. GBRC runners pulled off stunning performances, with excellent placings, especially in the women’s 3-5 and mens 3-5 categories. Vicky’s Valiants, consisting of Vicky Presland, Lesley Fuller, Eileen Shadforth, Tonie Wilson and Michelle Parry coming in 2nd place in the Female 3-5 event, running a total of 32 laps in 24:28:05. Warren’s Wonders came 4th in the Mens 3-5 category, with Chris Warren, Michael Simmons, Ben Ficken, Simon Dale and Clive a Thomas running a stunning 38 laps in 24:28:05. In the same category, Malcolm’s Machines ran 34 laps in 24:33:11. Team members were Malcolm Jarvis, Rob Thorpe, Andy Fuller, Patrick Reynolds and Nigel Smith. Taking 5th place in the mixed 3-5 event were Leeky’s Layabouts, with 34 laps in 24:42:08. Led by Shawn Leek were Jamie Neill, Janine Simpson, Kevin Stevens and Charlie Keitch. In 13th place were Bishop’s Barnstormers, Graham Semple, Frank Gardiner, Rosie Harrison, Tricia Stacey and Davina Swindell, 30 laps in 24:16:16. Following them in 23rd place were Rodger Alexander, Paul Carlisle, Tom Fowler and Anna Lyon, despite being a team of just 4 runners, Rodger’s Rockets managed to clock 28 laps in 24:25:27. McKay’s 5 Milers were John McKay, Lex Carlisle, Martin Owen, Mark Crittenden, Barbara Law, Lynsey Apps, Sue Sorrell and Harvey Lyon. In 24:14:53, this team ran 27 laps.

Earlier in the week, Chris Hayes ran in the Clacton 5k summer series, taking 28:31 to complete the race.
